French Furniture. Pair of Louis XVI style armchairs of green and gold painted carved wooden frames with padded elbow rests and medallion backs, upholstered with decorative petit point needlework worked on fabric by hand with wool thread. The frames have carved decoration with motifs derived from classical art and architecture like fluting, acanthus leafs, rosettes and friezes. While the two seats are upholstered with embroidered textile of the same floral motif the medallion backs are diverse: one of them depicts a woman and the other a man in a landscape. The woman is holding a stick with two cages on her left shoulder, a bird is sitting on her right hand. The man is also balancing a stick on his left side while carrying a basket in his right hand. He is accompanied by a dog. Both needlepoint scenes are framed by floral borders. Condition: The chairs appear to have been reupholstered sometime in the 19th century, given the design of the needle point, mid-century would seem correct. The original nail-head trim is missing on one chair, and normal wear and tear is noted but not deemed significant and repairable
