A Regency style and period (c. 1790- c. 1830) rosewood veneered workbox with mother-of-pearl inlaid decoration. Shape of the box is following the neoclassical taste of the Regency, in this case a sarcophagus form with wooden ring handles fixed with turned wooden peg. Also very popular for the eary 19th century was the use of exotic timbers, here Brazilian rosewood. Precisely inlaid stylised floral and foliage decor forming a clear and sharp outline. Interior is lined in red silk and paper, a tray divides the box into two compartments. Parts of the original interior are spread and could be put into their place by restoration. All kinds of British sewing materials like knobs, thread, spools, needles etc. are telling their own story about former times.
Condition: Ring handle is missing on one side. Feet (probably bun feet) are gone, only the four holes are visible on underside. Two pieces of veneer are missing on two corners.
