Gorham Manufacturing Co. was founded c. 1815 in Providence, Rhode Island, and has grown to one of the biggest silverware companies in the world. Gorham played an important role in the history of American decorative arts especially in the last part of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. This five-piece set is an example of Neoclassical taste. It is coated by electroplated silver and decorated with acanthus friezes and floral design. Every piece is signed at the bottom of the circular base: “Gorham [anchor] E P / Y701 (or 702, or 703, or 704, or 708…)”.
