Pair of cast brass ewers made purely for display, richly embellished with joyful putti playing in the clouds: writing, playing music, gathering flowers and more. Handle with classical ram head motif, stem and base having acanthus, laurel wreath and floral ornaments. The handle formed as winged infant demi-figure. The ewers are sealed up and cannot be filled. This type of large jug or pitcher was based in general on the form of the Ancient Greek pottery oenochoe, but varying in several particulars. They were made in many different materials. Original function: carrying water for washing hands. The word ewer is originating from the French word "evier" (14th century).
