French Cylinder Musical Box. 19th Century
A cylinder musical box playing several airs, contained in a rosewood case. The rosewood lid with marquetry bird and flowers, front of box with marquetry musical trophies. Inside the lid there a color print depicting a view of the famous Tuileries in Paris: "a Paris, chez GOSSELIN, Imp. F. dit. r. S. Jacque 71| Le Chateau Des Tuileries (Paris)." This musical box is a mechanical musical instrument. It has a comb shaped device which is made from steel then tempered to produce a number of 'springy' teeth varying in length from short to long. The teeth are plucked by pins set into a revolving cylinder (13 in. wide). As each tooth is plucked it produces a musical note. In addition to the cylinder a drum and three bells are adding sounds to each air. Impressed number : "3339"|"16" Such boxes were the forerunner to the gramophone.
